Charity Credit Cards

Charity credit cards make a donation to the relevant charity – for example the World Wildlife Fund or the British Heart Foundation – as soon as your account is opened. After that, the card provider donates more money every time you use the card.  However, this can be as little as 0.25% of the amount you spend.

Some charity credit cards will offer a lower-than-average interest rate as long as you pay off the balance in full every month. Many charity cards are available through credit card giant MBNA, so the deals tend to be in line with the wider market.

Good for: People who want to give to charity without thinking about it (or even paying for it providing you pay off your balance every month).

Bad for: People who want to give more substantial amounts to charity, which is best done by monthly Direct Debit from your bank account. This also means you can take advantage of Gift Aid (which means the charity can reclaim 28p in every pound donated). This is not possible with charity credit cards. Virgin's Charity Credit Card is the exception, as it donates via its Virginmoneygiving.com service.

Charity credit cards are also not a good choice for people wanting the most competitive credit deals around, like 0% interest offers.
