With only two shopping days left before Christmas, more Britons are likely to take out debit and credit cards and do their last minute shopping online.
Online retailer Amazon reported that it sold a million more items in the run-up to Christmas than it did in the same period last year.
Crocus, an online garden centre, has also seen more people logging on and shopping by means of debit and credit cards.
"It has been quite quiet up until last week, and since then it's got very, very busy - everyone must be leaving it to the last minute," a spokesperson told the BBC.
An apparent slump in high street sales and worries about debit and credit card fraud seemingly had no effect on those shopping online.
Last month over £2 billion worth of goods were sold over the internet with customers paying by debit or credit card. This is an increase of 50 per cent when compared to the same period last year.
Sainsbury's Bank predicted 8.9 billion credit card holders will charge their last minute purchases to credit cards.
The amount spent on credit cards is likely to top £1.82 billion in the last week before Christmas, the credit card company believes.
