Cash is king, debit and credit cards come second

Fri, 22 Jul 2005

It seems that Britons are not yet comfortable relying only on debit and credit cards.

A Post Office survey found that 80 per cent of people always carry cash with them.

The average British adult has about £23 with them every day, meaning that some £871 million in cash is being carried around the streets of Britain at any given time.

The Post Office Cash Nation research dispels the myth that we are living in society where people only carry their debit and credit cards, said Graham Halliday, the banking and finance director at the Post Office.

"It shows that people still want to carry good old-fashioned cash and often prefer human interaction when withdrawing money, with cashback and counter transactions featuring as popular methods for cash withdrawal," he said.

But in order for Britons to get their cash in hand, they still need to use debit and credit card to withdraw money from cash machines.

The fact that many cash machines still charge withdrawal fees has been under scrutiny by many consumer groups.

Earlier this month Which? urged the government to scrap withdrawal charges from all cash machines, enabling all banking customers to withdraw their money free of charge.
