Security conscious UK credit card holders have begun to place almost as much importance on credit card security features as they do on rates of interest, says research commissioned for Tesco Personal Finance.
Four out of five consumers choose cards with high profile security features when faced with a range of cards with broadly similar interest rates said researchers.
Credit card security has been brought to the forefront of borrowers minds recently, with one Briton in four having either lost credit card or had it stolen, and one in seven the victim of fraud.
More than seven out of every ten credit card holders believe that they have some responsibility to prevent fraud, and over half of respondents – 52 per cent – said that credit card providers should not offer protection to those who are careless of their own security.
"In order to ensure they don't gain any ground we need customers to play their part by taking sensible precautions to protect themselves," said Alistair Smillie, head of Tesco credit card.
"Consumers now want to know that when they sign up for a new credit card they are also signing up for protection should things go wrong. We are taking every step we can and we would encourage customers to do the same," he added.
