Credit card shopping at your fingertips

Thu, 23 Mar 2006

Credit card holders should not be concerned about the potential security risks of using new pay by touch 'technology, says a top executive.

The new technology that allows shoppers to verify their credit cards with their fingerprints at cash registers and promises quicker and more secure credit card spending could be introduced nationwide.

However, many credit card holders are sceptical about the security of the 'pay by touch payment method and are concerned that their personal data could be stolen.

But Tom Fischer, vice president of Paid by Touch Europe, says the security surrounding the system is extremely high and that it shouldn't be a concern stopping customers.

He explains that you initially register your credit card with your fingerprint, but when you pay for goods and have your fingerprint checked, your personal data is not transmitted. It is in fact an unintelligible code, which could not be used by thieves.

Mr Fischer added that the credit card holder's personal "information is held in a highly secure data centre" and it "surpasses most other levels of financial security".

Earlier this month the Pay by Touch method was officially trialled at the Midcounties Co-operative supermarket, where credit card holders could choose to pay via the fingerprint scan method.
