At least three-quarters of Brits mark their birthday with a party, with an annual total of £1.6 billion being spent on celebrations, new research shows.
Many people might turn to their credit cards to fund their birthday extravaganzas, especially the older generation, with two-thirds of the over 50s splashing out on a big bash.
According to a financial services provider Mint, the milestone birthday of 30 is no longer being ignored, with at least a quarter of people now throwing a party to celebrate the end of their twenties.
Putting a birthday getaway on your Visa is another popular option, with almost 20 per cent jetting off on a weekend break or a weeklong holiday.
Making use of the latest credit card offers could help people celebrate the passing of another year. The survey found that almost a quarter of Brits buy themselves a new birthday outfit and a tenth of women treat themselves to a beauty treatment or manicure on their birthday.
The survey also revealed that many people are no longer waiting for friends and family to send cards, but are spending almost £50 buying their own presents and treats, often relying on their credit cards to fund their purchases.
