Credit card fraud drops in NI, figures show

Tue, 30 May 2006

Debit and credit card fraud has dropped in the UK for the first time in a decade, according to research.

The Association for Payment Clearing Services figures show a 24 per cent drop in debit and credit card fraud in the province, which compares to a 13 per cent fall across the UK.

Lost and stolen debit and credit card fraud was down by 16 per cent, counterfeit fraud down 38 per cent and card identity theft was also down 36 per cent, according to reports.

However, card-not-present fraud, i.e. crimes committed on the card over the phone, internet or by post rose over the same period throughout the UK and by seven per cent in Northern Ireland.

Andrew Fallis, head of card development at Northern Bank, said: "We've really made progress in fighting fraud - most of this is the impact of the introduction of chip and pin technology."

New technology is being tested by boots which is designed to prevent 'shoulder surfers', criminals who watch credit or debit card users enter their pin number, to take advantage of chip and pin cards.
