Passive plastic warning for credit card users

Mon, 16 Oct 2006

Many UK consumers are using credit cards which offer no rewards, according to new research.

Almost 20 million credit card holders are using "passive plastic", which means they could miss out on benefits and rewards, a study from American Express has revealed.

This accounts for around 43 per cent of all UK credit card users, the new statistics indicate.

However, the American Express study also found that one-in-three credit card users would like to use their plastic to "make a difference", with 86 per cent claiming that they would like to contribute to charity.

The company suggests that by choosing a credit card with a charity incentive, users might be able to make contributions more effectively and easily.

Kate Harris, vice president of UK partnerships for American Express, said: "This research shows that many credit card holders still aren't getting anything back for their spending, but by making a small change to their wallet, they could collectively make a big difference to good causes."

Research earlier in the year from Morgan Stanley Credit Card revealed that Britons are now using credit cards to make more regular purchases, such as groceries.
