Financial advice provider uSwitch has urged providers to permanently withdraw credit card cheques.
The company has commented in the wake of the Royal Bank of Scotland's decision to permanently withdraw credit card cheques.
Nick White, head of personal finance at uSwitch, states that the bank's decision is "good news", adding that credit card cheques are often misunderstood by consumers.
"There is a general lack of awareness about the implications of using credit card cheques, which was highlighted in our recent research.
"This shows that one in three people that have used these cheques didn’t realise that there was a charge for doing so.
"Going forward, we would really like to see the providers that continue to issue these cheques marking them with tobacco-style health warnings to ensure people only use them in emergencies and budget for the charges incurred."
The Citizens' Advice Bureau recently warned that UK residents could be paying more than they need to by being "ill-informed and unconfident" about credit cards and associated costs, while providers are exploiting this to make profit.
