Cashless payments hit London

Wed, 15 Aug 2007

Consumers can now use cashless payments to pay for small items with an implement that also doubles up as a credit card.

Barclaycard has announced that EAT and Krispy Kreme will be the first retailers to accept the Barclaycard OnePulse without the need to sign or use a pin number for goods under £10.

Chief marketing officer at Barclaycard Elizabeth Chambers comments that cashless payments are becoming reality.

"They’re fast, secure, and a fantastic way to streamline your day - no more waiting in queues to pay for small ticket items. And the OnePulse card works just like a regular credit card for larger purchases, too," she remarks.

According to the financial services company, other major retailers are scrambling to join the scheme with Coffee Republic, YO! Sushi and Threshers all signing up.

All the purchases are listed on the consumer's credit card statement, as the holder of the card has to do no more than touch their card against a reader when they pay for cheap goods.

One in five credit cards in the UK is a Barclaycard.
