A significant number of people consider themselves to be "savvy shoppers", according to a new survey .

Research by PayPal found that 86 per cent of consumers think they know how to find bargains when shopping - either by looking for sale signs or looking for cheaper deals on the internet .

However, fewer than 40 per cent said that they make a stay with a budget when shopping, while under half admitted to doing their research before making purchases.

Cristina Hoole, shopping expert at PayPal, said that it is "encouraging" that many people are shopping in a "smarter" way to help them save money .

She added: "Pre-planning who you are going to buy for and setting a budget are essential elements to ensure that you don't regret it in January!"

In related news, Sainsbury's Bank recently reported that consumers are expected to spend £11.85 billion during the final week before Christmas .

The firm said that 18 per cent of this spending will be put on credit cards.
