Credit cards are a "convenient" way of paying for Christmas spending, one expert has suggested.
Donald MacLeod, head of cards at Sainsbury's Bank, said that credit cards ensure people do not have to carry "wads of cash" around with them and allow for greater "flexibility" when it comes to making purchases.
Additionally, many credit cards offer zero per cent deals on purchases, Mr MacLeod explained.
"There's an opportunity to buy something and not pay any interest on it and allow you to manage your financing of Christmas really quite carefully," he remarked.
People should look around and "take advantage" of the best deals available on the market in the new year, he added.
Research by Sainsbury's Bank revealed that 18 per cent of last-minute Christmas spending is expected to be placed on credit cards, totalling £2.1 billion.
The firm noted that 1.4 million people are planning to spend in excess of £1,000 during the week before Christmas.
