Customers urged to know their rights

If people intend taking unwanted gifts back this week, they ought to know their rights as consumers, according to one expert.

Halifax reports that retailers are likely to make 29 per cent more refunds on credit cards this month than at any other time in the year.

The firm noted that the average refund transaction is expected to be £55, rising to £60 for returns made in January.

Ken Stannard, head of Credit Cards at Halifax, said that it is "important" for people to be aware of their rights.

"The busy high street can be a stressful place at this time of year, but with the right knowledge of your shopping rights you can feel relaxed when returning gifts or sale purchases," he explained.

Last month, the UK's payments association Apacs predicted that Christmas shoppers would spend more than £5 billion online in December.

The organisation said that 30 million consumers now use the internet to make purchases.
