Affinity credit cards praised

Wed, 04 Jul 2007

Affinity credit cards, which offer a link to certain charitable organisation and thereby enable users to donate regularly, can still offer good value for money, one expert has claimed.

The comments were made by Catherine Turner, public relations officer at the Co-operative Bank, whose company provides credit cards that are linked to a large number of organisations, including Action Aid, Amnesty International, Help the Aged, Barnados and Greenpeace.

Ms Turner praised the positive impact these credit cards can make, whether utilised as a main donation for charity or alongside regular donations through other channels.

"It is a personal choice for individuals as to whether they would like to make additional payments to other charities alongside their affinity card," she remarked.

The official added that although some of the proceeds are subsidised towards the charity, affinity credit card users can still obtain a "competitive rate" on their plastic.

Barclaycard recently launched its Breathe credit card, which will utilise profits to fund eco-friendly initiatives around the world, with the firm pledging at least £1 million in the first year after the card's inception.
