Edinburgh credit cards copied

Tue, 22 Apr 2008

According to reports in the Scottish media, as many as 5000 credit cards in Edinburgh have been copied. The credit card fraud has been occurring at two petrol stations, where chip and pin security has been violated.

A BP petrol station and a Shell Garage saw their chip and pin machines altered, giving thieves the ability to use customer credit card details . The thieves using the cards are believed to have netted as much as £250,000.

The practice, known in police circles as card cloning, sees thieves alter the magnetic strips of card machines in order to copy details. Police warned that this type of crime is on the rise, with lots of money at stake.

Those who believe their credit card has been defrauded should contact their bank and the police immediately.
