The clothing retailer Cotton Traders has revealed that customer credit card details were hacked from its site earlier this year. In January, thousands of credit cards were compromised when thieves broke into the Cotton Traders website, which was supposed to be encrypted and secure.
Cotton Traders made certain to notify all credit card issuers as soon as the security breach happened, and claimed that the majority of cards were cancelled and reissued at once. A company statement reportedly read: "We can confirm that our customer credit card data is encrypted on our website, but if any of our customers have been a victim of fraud they should contact their card issuer."
As many as 38,000 credit cards were caught up in the theft, and Cotton Traders pointed out that they had improved security on their website. This type of cyber-crime is part of the growing Internet economy, experts commented, and tougher legislation may be brought into force in the future.
