Police credit cards held

Mon, 31 Mar 2008

According to reports in the credit card news this morning, a police enquiry has resulted in 1,400 credit cards issued to police officers being withdrawn. A widespread investigation is underway over alleged unauthorised expenditure.

The MPA (Metropolitan Police Authority) are conducting an enquiry that indicates some £2m of police expenses are at this stage not accounted for. The enquiry has been running for some time, with 800 cards already confiscated in January. The initial examination dates back to 2003.

The extent to which police officers are involved in the credit card fraud remains to be seen, and senior officers maintain that just a handful of police officers are to blame. The trouble stems from a met office decision to give 3,533 credit cards to police officers to cut down on paperwork from expenses claims .

The case continues.
