Credit card application tips

People need to "almost certain" of getting a credit card before they apply for one, one expert believes.

David Kuo, head of personal finance at Fool.co.uk, explains that the fact that credit card companies are tightening their lending means that people should look at their finances more closely.

He said: "Look at your own credit reference and make sure you haven’t got too many credit cards on there and make sure that you haven’t defaulted on any credit card payments ."

Mr Kuo added that people should also make sure that they do not have high levels of outstanding credit card debts .

If consumers get their finances in order then they should not have any problems in getting a credit card, he concluded.

Yesterday, Simeon Linstead, head of personal finance at uSwtich.com, urged people to challenge their credit card company if they are unhappy with any changes made to their account .
