Credit card holders urged to seek protection from BA strikes

Thu, 17 Dec 2009

Credit card holders affected by the proposed British Airways (BA) strikes have been offered a possible safety net, it emerged on Tuesday (December 15th).

The carrier confirmed earlier this week that its cabin crew have disclosed plans to engage in industrial action between December 22nd and January 2nd 2010.

According to estimates, up to one million Britons could be affected by the subsequent rescheduling of flights .

However, Rochelle Turner, head of research for Which? Holiday, explained that anyone who booked a holiday with BA using their credit cards should refer to the Consumer Credit Act of 1974.

Section 75 of the Act entitles buyers to a refund from their credit card provider - as well as the vendor of the relevant good or services - as long as the booking was valued between £100 and £30,000.

"Passengers who booked their flights before the strike ballot was announced on [November 2nd] should be covered by their travel insurance," Ms Turner told Channel Four News.

"Any flights booked since then are not likely to be covered by standard policies, but passengers should check with their insurance providers ."

BA was formed in 1974 and now flies to roughly 150 destinations, excluding subsidiaries and code-shares.
