Abbey credit card scoops award

The Abbey Zero Credit card has scooped the top award at the annual Card Awards ceremony.

At the event, the offering was dubbed Best New Credit Card Product of the Year.

Roger Lovering, managing director of credit cards at Abbey, claimed the product had beaten off some tough competition to bag top spot.

"I am particularly pleased that Abbey Zero has been recognised by the industry. We had two entries shortlisted, the Abbey Credit Card and the eventual winner, the Abbey Zero Card," he said.

The fact that the winning credit card has such a highly focused rewards programme was key to its success, Mr Lovering added.

Yesterday, Peter Harrison, credit card expert at Moneysupermarket.com, welcomed the news that Barclaycard is to freeze its interest rates.

He urged other credit card providers to follow suit, noting that they had been "strangely quiet" on the matter when compared to those issuing other financial products .
