The Post Office could relaunch as a national bank, under the banner of the peoples bank. The proposals were floated to a committee of MPs who are deciding on the future of the Royal Mail .
Many Post Offices already provide financial and banking services, but the new proposal would expand the range of products and outlets. The Post Office could function like a normal bank, selling mortgages, personal loans and credit cards, no to mention current accounts and debit cards .
Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier was reported as commenting: "Royal Mail has been very clear that we want to expand the range of banking services we provide. There are a number of things in the pipeline."
The news could increase the prominence of the Post Office as a provider of credit cards .
