Abta publishes overseas credit card guide

Mon, 08 Jun 2009

Those expecting to get abroad this summer may wish to look at a new guide published by the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta), which advises on the use of credit cards abroad.

Statistics from the group show that 317 million transactions amounting to £27.8 billion were made on UK-issued credit cards in foreign countries in 2008, a figure which is up more than ten per cent on the previous year.

Available to download from the UK Cards Association website, the guide advises holidaymakers and business travellers on the charges they may incur when using their credit card overseas .

Sandra Quinn, director of communications at Abta, said: "Using your debit or credit card is a convenient and safe way to pay when you're overseas. However, everyone should be aware that there may be fees or costs connected with using your card in a foreign cash machine or shop."

Abbey Credit Cards recently said that British people planning on travelling abroad this summer are expected to pay a collective £73 million in foreign exchange fees.
