Mobile phone company Orange has entered an agreement with financial services group Barclays to implement a new technology that could turn mobile phones into credit cards .
Together the two companies have a customer base of some 28 million people, meaning that the mobile phone handset come credit card could be widely used in the future.
The mobile phone credit card system will use contactless technology previously integrated by Barclay card in their credit cards . In this way, Orange customers will be able to make payments by swiping their cards against a scanner.
The chief executive of Barclaycard, Antony Jenkins, reportedly commented: "There has been a lot of talk about mobile payments and now it's going to become a reality for our customers because of Barclaycard's commitment to contactless technology and the coming together of two dynamic and imaginative organisations."
